Representative Ocasio-Cortez is arguably one of the most popular politicians ever. She has amassed a great following on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, where she has 8.5 million and 6.4 million followers respectively. Not only is she the youngest congresswoman ever, but she also represents so much more what the democrat party stands for. She gives young women of colour the representation they need.
AOC is the culmination of everything the many on the right despise and the and many on the left love. She is a young, educated, relatable and well-spoken woman of colour, coming from a humble background, having lost her father when she was only 19. Much like many young Americans, she has experienced working in service jobs in small restaurants and bars to support her family and graduating with student debt.
When she campaigned in the 2018 Congressional Election, it was the first time Joe Crowley had been challenged since 2004. While Joe Crowley’s campaign was funded by large corporations such as New York Life Insurance, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign was entirely based on donations.
Since coming into congress, she has proposed some extremely popular bills, such as the Green New Deal, Tuition-Free public universities and Medicare for all.
AOC continues to inspire young people everywhere and shows us the true meaning of hard work and perseverance.
