America refuses to join W.H.O.?

Due to the World Health Organization being invloved, The Washington post reported on Tuesday that the USA will not be joining the effort to find a vaccine for coronavirus. The USA started to leave W.H.O in July, after Trump stated he would in May.

While 172 countries are ‘engaged in discussions’ to participate in finding a vaccine to Covid-19, Trump has refused because he does not want to work with W.H.O. after their response to the pandemic was apparently “China-centric.”

Covax, which is co-led by W.H.O. and Gavi, aims to provide Global equitable access to a vaccine. The USA believes that as it has many candidates for a vaccine, it does not need to join, which means that it could hoard any available vaccine and leave more vulnerable countries without anything.

The leader of W.H.O. responded by stating the virus ‘is a test of global solidarity and divisions’, describing it as a common enemy and calling for a united world. as the ‘best way forward, and the only way forward, is together.’ The United States is going directly against this in its decision to find a vaccine on its own, and risking the health of the rest of the world in this.
