Between 00:30 and 2:20 am on Sunday, a series of stabbings that are believed to be linked occurred which the police have since declared a ‘major incident’ - meaning that the situation could pose serious harm or security risk to the public. So far, one person has been confirmed dead whilst two others are seriously injured in hospital, and a further five have suffered non life threatening injuries. Multiple scenes around the Hurst Street area are being held by police in connection to the crime.
Despite part of the crime scene falling in Birmingham’s Gay Village, the police have confirmed that the incident was not a hate crime, nor gang related, as vicitms were seemingly chosen at random by an individual; however it is being treated as linked. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has also commented that he has received no information indicating that this may be “terror-related”. As of yet, no arrests have been made but a single ‘male suspect’ is being sought, as confirmed by Chief Superintendent Steve Graham in a press statement Sunday.
The police have released an appeal for information from anyone who was in the area around the time of the crime, in addition to asking those with “video footage or social media photographs” to come forward. They further added that there would be a significant armed and unarmed police presence throughout the city in the next few days, with the CCTV being released as they look for the suspect. Ch Supt Steve Graham urged those in Birmingham not to be afraid, but to remain alert.
