The Mayor of Louisville, Kentucky has initiated the process of firing Brett Hankison, one of the three Louisville Metro Police officers responsible for the wrongful death of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor on 13th March. The investigation of her death has been open since 21st May, after her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit on 27th April. The suspect that the police had been looking for had already been arrested by other officers at another location, prior to the officers raiding her home and senselessly shooting her eight times as she slept.
This initiation of termination proceedings is the first step to holding the involved police officers accountable, but it is not enough. The Change.org petition for charges to be made against John Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove has over 7.6 million signatures, at the time of writing. On 5th June, what would’ve been her 27th birthday, people came together to celebrate her life and to campaign for justice. Her name has been echoed at anti-racism protests globally and we will continue to say her name. Breonna Taylor.
