Canada’s Indigenous women’s genocide crisis

Indigenous women in Canada are going missing and being found dead. A 2019 inquiry discovered that since 1980, over 1,200 aboriginal women have been murdered or have gone missing.

This could relate to how indigenous people were colonized in Canada. Indigenous people face many socio-economic issues due to the effects of colonization and indigenous women are most affected. Many Indigenous women are still healing from the discrimination they have faced, which was birthed from a system that puts indigenous women in the worst possible position.

It’s safe to say that the government doesn’t take these reports seriously and that they ignore the voices of pleas from indigenous women. Cases are piling up and justice has not been served.

On September 28, 2020, Joyce Echaquan, an indigenous woman, was broadcasted live by medical staff, as she moaned in pain. She was clearly in need of help. The medical staff can be seen mocking her and making racial comments. She died moments later. So far, a nurse and an orderly have been fired from the incident.

This led to a public outcry and peaceful protests. When will Canada finally acknowledge that a genocide is happening towards their own native people? We must demand justice- not just for Joyce, but the many indigenous women like her who are forgotten.
