Over the past days there has been mounting concern of a second wave of the coronavirus occurring in Spain. This comes amidst various regional outbreaks and a rising number of new cases; the Health Ministry reported approximately 900 confirmed cases on Friday, almost triple the number of just a few weeks ago.
Catalonia in the north-east of Spain has seen one of the country’s more intense outbreaks, prompting authorities to announce the closing of Nightclubs in an attempt to discourage the city’s nightlife which may be contributing to the spread of the virus. In further attempts to curb the rate of transmission, wearing face masks has been made compulsory.
The UK has re-introduced a mandatory 14 day quarantine for travellers returning from Spain, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, much to the protests of British citizens who are either currently abroad or had imminent travel plans. Norway has announced it will be implementing a similar policy, whilst France has advised its citizens against traveling to hotspot areas, such as Catalonia. The Spanish Foreign Minister has insisted that “Spain is safe for Spaniards and for tourists”, despite contrary evidence of a second outbreak.
Ultimately, the coronavirus is still a world-wide threat with potentially severe symptoms and long-term effects on health that we may not yet be entirely aware of. The number of cases continues to rise globally.
