When you hear ‘Africa’ what do you picture? Some may think of a rising economic power, an imminent threat, forced migration, a “tinderbox of terrorism” or poverty. A wide range of narratives has been painted depicting Africa in different ways over the past few decades. The truth, however, is more complicated than it seems.
Project Syndicate referred to Africa’s growth as the ‘African threat’. In reality, Africa is a diverse continent that is shaping its destiny: the ‘African opportunity’. By accepting Africa as an opportunity, rather than a threat, governments, citizens, and organizations around the world will be better positioned to face the challenges that are still prevalent.
Africa is clearly on the road to better government stability as, since the start of 2015, the continent has undergone more than 27 leadership changes. This highlights the push for greater accountability, transparency and democracy- 3 things which many countries have shown improvements in over the last 5 years. Citizens are educating themselves and are becoming more vocal and equipped to hold their elected officials accountable to the needs of the people. While this is not true for all nations in the continent, it is a step in the right direction.
Not only is Africa improving its governance, but they are reducing the impact of diseases, reducing violence (with 2017 being their ninth least violent year) and beginning to tackle social challenges like extreme poverty. For continued growth, Africa needs support and acknowledgement from the rest of the world. The continent is not just a holiday destination, or a school volunteering trip- it is the home of 1.216 bn people and 54 countries. The rest of the world should not count Africa out.
Like all continents, Africa has its issues, but it is not a threat. It is an opportunity that is being moulded by and for its people.
