Donald's Dangerous Game

Updated: Oct 11, 2020

President Donald Trump has done a terrible job containing COVID-19 in the United States, but when he caught the virus himself, how did he handle it?

Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after the first presidential debate with Joe Biden. He is 74 years old, so he is within the age bracket for those at risk during the pandemic. The President was airlifted to a military hospital in a helicopter, and since then has been reported to be doing “very well”.

However, Trump quickly left the hospital, downplaying the virus and posing for pictures on the balcony of the White House without his mask. Trump’s physician advised that he may not be out of the woods yet, and was certainly still contagious. Despite this obvious danger, Trump still took off his mask. In a speech after being discharged, Trump proclaimed that he “had to” get the coronavirus, as “nobody that’s a leader would not do what (he) did.”

With Trump saying the virus isn’t bad and that he was able to get over it easily, many of his impressionable supporters may continue to not take the virus seriously.

Trump also absurdly compared COVID-19 to the flu in a tweet where he stated, “Flu season is coming up! Are we going to close down our country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with COVID.” This speaks volumes about how educated he is in the matter of the virus (and that is to say, not at all).

The USA has been hit hard by COVID-19, with 7.4 million cases and over 200,000 deaths (⅕ of the global total). Additionally, the economic effects due to the pandemic are indisputable. The USA is in a recession, with unemployment levels unseen since the Great Depression. If Trump continues like this, it won’t surprise anyone if the USA continues to decline, in both economic and medical stances.
