Femicides in Mexico

What is femicide? Femicide is broadly defined as the intentional killing of women or children because they are females.

987 women were murdered in Mexico the first 4 months of this year, 308 of these were classified as femicides.

Ever since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a surge in the domestic abuse of women and the number of femicides in Mexico.

Many of the murders committed have been of extremely violent nature; such as the murder of 25-year-old Ingrid Escamilla, who was found brutally slain, her body skinned and missing some of its organs, or the killing of 7-year-old Fátima whose body was found inside a plastic bag, sexually abused and beaten.

Thousands of women have demanded justice by taking part in a mass protest in early march, or participating in “A Day Without Women” where they would stay home from work and school so that society can feel the impact of the absence of women.

In spite of these events, the Mexican president has decided to cut 75% of women’s shelters budgets instead of trying to rectify the injustices happening in his country.
