Fighting mental health stigma

Despite significant advances made in the understanding of mental health, mental health problems are still stigmatised. There are many misconceptions about the subject, that can manifest in dismissive, offensive, or hurtful behaviour towards individuals experiencing mental health issues. Here are a few ways to combat the stigma:

  1. Words matter. We must speak respectfully about mental health and avoid using hurtful words such as ‘crazy’ or ‘strange’ and speak up if we hear harmful language.

  1. If you feel comfortable, share your experience with mental health as it can be empowering both for you and for others who are struggling. Additionally, it can help disprove harmful stereotypes and encourage others to speak up and seek help. We must also recognize that mental health problems can appear and impact people in different ways.

  1. Get involved in a campaign like Time to Change, which aims to end the stigma and discrimination towards those experiencing mental health problems.

Although the stigma surrounding mental health is reducing, it is still present in society. We need to change this.
