Charities all over the world, such as the Fawcett Society, the Women’s Global Empowerment Fund, and Girl Up, to name a few, work tirelessly to achieve their goal of gender equality. Girl Up is a charity and organisation which aims to empower girls and women worldwide, as well as combat issues of gender-based violence, inequalities and educational setbacks, particularly in less advantaged areas of the world. The charity has networks in countless cities, each with individual teams of incredible women, all of whom work so hard to battle these issues.
The charity also put great focus on specific social issues, for instance, the lack of women in STEM, period poverty, child marriage, FGM and sexual violence, as well as domestic violence. These issues are extremely prevalent all over the world, and actions taken to alleviate the impacts of them are necessary, making the steps that charities like Girl Up are taking to battle them are extremely valuable.
The teams of volunteers run functions to raise awareness and funding, as well as to empower people to use their voices and skills in order to make a difference. The Charity regularly holds events such as open-mics, virtual panels, award ceremonies -working closely with celebrities such as Cara Delevigne- as well as hosting book clubs and seminars. One team, who work in Norwich, are set to run a virtual conversation about feminism and the impact it has on people’s lives, on Saturday the 12th of December.
