Harry and Meghan's Interview

In an interview reminiscent of Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir many years prior, Meghan and Harry sat down with Oprah on the 7th of March to reveal some shocking details that led to their departure from the Royal Family.

Among the most shocking allegations made were that Meghan was suicidal and was ‘refused help by the institution' and that conversations were had about ‘how dark’ Baby Archie’s skin would be, with an unnamed member of the family. Among this, British tabloids’ relentless assault on Meghan hasn’t helped the situation, using headlines such as ‘Straight Outta Compton’ for her implying that she is ‘ghetto’ when she grew up many kilometres away from Compton.

It would be naive to say that race doesn’t play a part in this, with Meghan being mixed-race and the first person of colour to be a part of the Royal Family. The fact that the Royal Family refused to support Harry and Meghan when they were being attacked by the press only cements their racist attitudes. Additionally, British wealth comes from centuries of oppression and colonial rule. The 94-year-old Queen has witnessed the fall of many colonies, and yet the Crown continues to be a symbol of oppression (especially with the stolen Kohinoor diamond being its main feature).

The similarities to Diana’s story are uncanny, in terms of the lack of support received by the Family for their mental health and the pressure from the media.

Perhaps these new revelations will be the nail in the coffin that is the Royal Family.
