The week, kicked off by International Women’s Day, was one of the most tragic ever seen for women in the UK. Ending with the murder of Sarah Everard, and the police’s horrific reaction to her vigil, the overwhelming presence of misogyny was exposed.
But something was different this time. Instead of us once again telling women to walk on main roads and keep their keys between their fingers, we started telling men to call out misogyny in ways women can’t. So, boys, how do you hold men accountable?
First of all, you need to understand that at some point, you or a friend have probably been part of the problem. Whether that be catcalling, making a rape joke, or simply refusing to call out misogyny, because if you’re not part of the problem, surely you’re part of the solution? But that’s not the case.
In order to actively help women, you have to speak up. Call out harassment- stigmatise it in your friend group; speak to women you know and ask how to make them more comfortable. Because, if you aren’t trying to stop the problem, then the chances are, you are the problem.
