How not to be a White Saviour

Updated: Jul 11, 2020

I was first introduced to the “White Saviour Complex”when enrolling in an International Development course. For those who are unaware of this issue, let me explain:

NGO media and aid campaigns often present the audience with an over simplified depiction of countries in the global South. Narratives almost always feature children in need and a (usually White) celebrity, who swoops in and single handedly saves them. Ed Sheeran’s comic relief ad and Stacey Dooley’s “obsessed” post are prime examples of this portrayal. Most people perpetuating the White Saviour Complex are incredibly well-intentioned. However, using intentions as justification to negate accountability hinders progress. The “No White Saviours” campaign believes in holding a higher standard of volunteering & demanding better. Radi-aid is infamous for its humorous role reversal ads and Rusty Radiator awards, given when stereotypes are harmed.

They ask you to:

  1. Educate yourself: what is the history of this region? Why is it under developed? The issue goes deeper than what you see on TV.

  2. Empower others: give specialist educators who are often unheard your platform.

  3. Interrogate your motives: underdeveloped countries are not a “find yourself” playground. If nobody knew what you were doing, would you still help?
