Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris to run alongside him during the 2020 Presidential election.
Harris is currently a Senator for California and is a former attorney general. Biden tweeted that she was ‘one of the country’s finest public servants’, and other Democrats have tweeted in support of her, showing a united front.
Harris has an interesting voting record for someone who has been very vocal about her support for BLM online. She was criticized from the left for not persecuting the police strongly enough, as she did not investigate the killing of a Black man shot by police after Civil Rights activists asked her to, among other legislation which disadvantaged poorer and minority groups.
She has pledged, however, to end violence to trans women of colour, as well as passing an equality act for LGBT+ people. This comes despite blocking gender reassignment surgery for an inmate.
Trump has already responded to her appointment, commenting on her low level of votes at primaries, seemingly confident he will beat them in the election.
Harris’s voting record does not show her to be the progressive candidate she claims to be. She (and Biden) must be made accountable to past actions and realise the people that they have hurt. However, supporting them and voting for them are different matters- Americans must decide if they are willing to vote for them, despite their troubling records, to vote Trump out come November.
