Performative activism. It’s impossible not to have seen it. It’s hopping on the bandwagon, putting up the front that you really do care. In this day and age, it’s easy to pretend. Like a post. Post a black square. Phew, that’s enough caring about equality for today.
Think back to June. Everyone was showing their sympathy, their support, their “I promise I’m not racist” pledge. Not a single person seemed to ignore the battle cry of “Black Lives Matter”. Everyone was calling for change. When the whole world, and specifically the USA, was at its most divided, Instagram was filled with unity.
Then the “trend” was over. We went back to normal. People’s stories that used to be packed with anti-racist guides were replaced with giveaways and posts of their favourite singers, and the longing for had justice vanished. No one is saying to devote every waking moment to a cause. You’ll burn out; you’re a human being, not a breathing protest sign. But if you say you care, then care. Share stories, petitions, call out prejudice from your family and friends, do anything that could help. That’s the goal. Because if your activism doesn’t help anyone, then why do it?
