Pressurising Georgia – Trump bids to overturn result

On Saturday morning, Trump called Georgia’s governor to pressure him for help overturning Biden’s win in the state.

Trump urged Brian Kemp, Republican governor for Georgia, to persuade the state legislature to overturn President-elect Biden’s victory in the state, in another bid to reclaim the election.

Trump also requested the governor to demand an audit of signatures on mail ballots, which Kemp later tweeted to note that he’d already publicly advocated in favour of. Kemp has previously pointed out that this is something he has no power to do, declining the president’s appeal.

This request to the governor came just before Trump spoke in Georgia on behalf of the run-off senate race. Where he went on to reiterate the idea that “We’re gonna win. We always win. Somehow, we find a way to win.” ‘Somehow’ being the most unsettling word in an already unsettling statement.

As the campaign continues the struggle to overturn election-day votes, fighting to prove their point of rife fraud, this can easily be seen as a desperate attempt to help Trump. Giuliani, lead lawyer for Trump’s case, has just been confirmed to have coronavirus, another hit for Trump’s campaign. On Friday, the president and his allies suffered legal deftness in six states. These failures included decisive rejections of fraud and other irregularities in Arizona and Nevada. Other failures came in Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Trump’s legal efforts are floundering, and only time will tell where these developments will next lead.
