Rape allegations lead to arrest of Conservative MP

TW: mentions of rape and sexual assault.

On Saturday August 1st a Conservative MP was arrested on suspicions of rape and sexual assault following allegations made to the London Metropolitan Police on the 31st of July by an ex-parliamentary employee. These allegations relate to four separate incidents occurring between July 2019 and January 2020 at various addresses around London. They accuse the now former minister of rape, sexual assault and coercive control. According to sources of the Sunday Times, which first reported on the incident, the victim was left so traumatised she had to go to hospital.

The Conservative Party has released a statement to emphasize that it takes allegations of this nature “extremely seriously”, before further remarking, “As this matter is now in the hands of the police, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”. However, there have also been reports that the Party’s chief whip Mark Spencer had previously been aware of these allegations and had spoken to the victim, yet hadn’t realised the “magnitude” of the incidents.

The identities of both parties have not been released to the public.
