The death of Sarah Everard has ignited a movement that has been suppressed and forgotten for too long. Outrage at the femicides that are swept away and written off has spread – and for the first time in a long time, it seems as though men and boys are interested and active in continuing the conversation, and taking action.
Men and boys are spreading awareness on social media, talking to the women in their lives, and taking necessary steps. Although this takes courage, and deserves respect, it is not an act of heroism. It is not something women should have to be grateful for.
All men and boys should be active against sexism, femicide and sexual assault. It is not the responsibility of women to ensure their safety. It should not be the responsibility of women to protest for their right to live – to feel safe, to trust the police, to be heard. So thank you to those who are standing up – but remember it’s your responsibility, not ours.
