Russian Government Resignations and Alexei Navalny

Recent occurrences concerning the Russian government have been eventful. So here’s a recap:

Protests have been breaking out in support of the release of Alexei Navalny-the “man Vladimir Putin fears most”. He is the opposition leader of Russia who has repeatedly criticised Putin and his United Russia Party, claiming it is full of “crooks and thieves”. Five months ago Navalny was medically evacuated to Berlin after being poisoned by a deadly nerve agent. Once discharged, a month later, he was taken back to Russia and detained for violating terms of a suspended jail sentence. He denies this and says these claims are to silence him, calling on his supporters to protest. As a result, people are taking to the streets to call for his release.

Russian Prime Minister and former President, Dmitry Medvedev, has resigned, as well as the entire cabinet, following Putin’s speech to Parliament on constitutional change and his succession in 2024. To people’s surprise, Putin claimed he supported the two-term limit for presidents in Russia, despite the suspicion that he would seek to extend his term. Medvedev claimed this was because “we as the government should allow our country’s president to make all necessary decisions before that.”
