Scotland's Renewables

In 2020, Scotland provided astounding figures regarding their energy. They generated enough electricity from renewables in 2019 that it accounted for 90.1% of its total electricity consumption that year. This was 30.5 TWh of electricity to come from renewable sources. To put this into perspective, you could power 6.7 billion mobile phones for almost a year or boil about 700 billion kettles. Even better, they aimed for 100% to come from renewable sources by the end of 2020 (this data has not yet been published but will be this year).

With our Earth on the edge we need to invest even further into renewables. The Scottish Government even said themselves that to decarbonise energy - intensive industries, heating buildings and transport, renewable electricity supplies would need to be further enhanced.

In addition, for Scotland and most other countries there are things yet to do such as reaching net zero. This is where any emissions are balanced by absorbing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere. Scotland will particularly find this difficult with their economy based around the oil and gas industry.

However, this achievement is exactly what we needed to hear and is a step in the right direction.
