Second Lockdown in France

President Emmanuel Macron has declared a second national lockdown in France to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The four-week lockdown is set to last until December 1, though this will be reassessed every 15 days. All non-essential businesses such as restaurants will be closed. However, President Macron announced that schools and colleges “will stay open with reinforced health measures.” Working from home and online learning at universities has been recommended as much as possible.

Covid deaths are at the highest level since spring, and President Macron emphasised the risk of “a second wave that no doubt will be harder than the first”. Throughout Europe, the number of Covid cases has been rising. In England, almost 100,000 people are catching the virus daily, while Germany joins France in its decision to impose an emergency lockdown. According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, “We are deep in the second wave,” and “this year’s Christmas will be a different Christmas.”
