SNP: What now?

After the recent events in the Scottish Parliament, Nicola Sturgeon has been cleared of misleading Parliament, found not to have broken the ministerial code, and a vote of no confidence has been strongly rejected. Overall, this is a victory. But the Scottish Government and SNP won’t go undamaged by this.

First of all, the occurrence of a controversy like this with an election in the upcoming months, it’s unlikely that SNP seats won’t decrease, even to a small extent.

Also, many voters may want to distance themselves from the current government due to its failure to address sexual harassment claims and protect female civil servants.

To top it off, voters may struggle to trust the SNP. Many people know that prior to his hearing, Alex Salmond was told to withhold certain evidence, or be threatened with jail time, insinuating that there was more to the hearings than was allowed to appear, and that the SNP may have something to hide.

Overall, the upcoming Scottish elections don’t look hopeful. However, this could be the situation for many other Scottish parties, whether it be Labour and the Liberal Democrat’s, for withstanding the vote of no confidence, or the Conservative Party for being unsuccessful in pushing it.
