South Africa's Modern Prohibition

Seeking to limit the growth of the coronavirus, South Africa has introduced a national ban on the sale of alcohol. An evening curfew has also been implemented, as mask-wearing becomes compulsory in outdoor spaces. The curfew lasts between 9pm-4am, and excludes those commuting to and from work, as well as those seeking medical support.⠀ It is supposed that the ban will reduce the number of alcohol-related admissions into hospitals, thereby increasing the number of available hospital beds. According to data from the WHO, South Africa has the 5th highest global consumption rate of alcohol, at 28.9 litres per capita. Whilst the majority of South Africans abstain from, or are moderate in their alcohol consumption, the country suffers a minority of very heavy drinkers.⠀ ⠀ The moves come after President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed concern that South Africa would soon lack the bed space to care for patients and fight the pandemic. Mr Ramaphosa told the nation that it would likely be facing its Covid-19 peak between July and September, having already confirmed over 276,242 coronavirus cases, and almost 5,000 deaths. Over the last few days, South Africa has reported a steady growth of Covid-19, with an average rise of 10,000 new cases per day.⠀
