During the past couple months we’ve seen different strategies from each country when it comes to responding to the coronavirus. One country in the news recently for their declining death rate has been Sweden but the country’s aim towards “herd immunity” has not come without a cost.
Unlike most countries, Sweden did not enforce strict lockdown rules, instead opting to close universities and advise older citizens to self isolate with the idea that herd immunity would eventually be reached and the country would see economic benefits from staying open.
Sweden’s death toll has been significantly higher than its neighbouring countries with over 5500 deaths and being only a country of 10.1 million. Given the countries relaxed lockdown rules, this number is actually lower than expected most likely due to many Swedish citizens voluntarily self-isolating but the number is still alarmingly high and should not be brushed aside.
Through this, there were little positive outcomes seen as the country has not benefited economically nor is it close to having herd immunity protecting the population and hence stands as evidence that harsher lockdowns similar to those put in place in New Zealand are the safest way to handle the virus and protect the population.
