The New 3-tier Lockdown system

England has a new 3-tier system to combat coronavirus, placing every area of England into medium (Tier one), high (tier two) or very high (tier three) alert, based on rate of infection.

While areas in tier one are restricted to groups of six and pubs, restaurants and bars must close at 10 in the evening, tier two adds to this by restricting who you can meet indoors. This is meeting who you do not live with indoors socially- outside is still permitted, as long as it is restricted to groups of six. Tier three goes further to ban all meeting socially with people outside of your household or support bubble indoors. However, meeting with people outdoors in groups of six is still allowed, as long as it is not in a private garden. Bars and pubs can also only serve alcohol with a meal.

Scotland has different restrictions, due to their higher level of cases.

Boris Johnson defended this in the House of Commons on Wednesday, claiming it was supported by government science advisors. Opposition leader Keir Starmer, however, said that he supported a “circle break”, in which the country would go into full lockdown for two to three weeks, in order to decrease the infection rate.
