The Presidency in a Pandemic

With Biden being ahead of Trump in the polls and the return of coronavirus press briefings in the US, Trump finally admits “it’s going to get worse before it gets better”.

From “this is the new hoax” to “it will go away”, the president’s previously blasé attitude

failed to convince Americans, as confirmed coronavirus cases reach 4.31million and deaths hit 149,000, now the president is having to change his tune to save face.

With the President initially mocking masks as “politically correct”, he has recently deemed wearing them as “patriotic” and been photographed wearing them in public for the first time. Furthermore, the president is now stressing the importance of testing instead of deeming the virus as a “hoax” and “fake news”, by the Democrats, to cost him the election.

Another U-turn came on the Republican Convention in Jacksonville, where Trump has now contradicted his typical showman-style presidency in favour of postponing the convention (reluctantly) after the state governor insisted social-distancing would have to be enforced if it were to be held. Trump has also adjusted his stance on the reopening of schools. The shift away from the original White House conferences is visible, as in the return of them we see more scripted and punctual analysis of the Covid-19 impact, as Trump tries to reduce the ramifications of his weak reactions to the pandemic up to this point.
