The Shadow Pandemic

The UN has described the increase in domestic violence during the lockdown as a "shadow pandemic" alongside the COVID-19. It is thought that cases have increased by about 20% with many being trapped at home with their abusers.

The lockdown fosters tension and strain caused due to security, health, and money worries - complicating existing domestic violence.

Helplines all over the world have registered an increase in calls. This is only a fraction of the issue; Women and girls in many countries may not have access to the internet or mobile phones, effectively cutting them off from key resources that can help them.

Where women do have access to the internet, online violence against them is on the rise. Some abusers are using the increased usage of online platforms as an opportunity to groom young people into exploitation.

The Ebola pandemic showed that crisis often leads to an increase in exploitation including trafficking, child marriage, and sexual abuse. COVID-19 is likely following similar trends at present. Violence is expected to increase in the aftermath, following increasing unemployment and financial strains.

The COVID-19 has already tested us in ways most of us have never experienced. We must not only survive the virus but also tackle the indirect costs and abuses of the pandemic.
