The US Presidential debate

The US Presidential debate on Tuesday was chaotic. Several claims were made, almost none were verified, and the practically unmoderated nominees insulted each other over informing voters on who to choose in the November election. In between petty comments and the constant interruptions which made what they were saying unintelligible, a few points of significance were made.

Memorable moments include Biden asking the President to shut up, while several viewers also believed that Biden was wearing a wire, a conspiracy that the Trump ads encouraged, which was proved false.

In addition, President Trump claimed that many of his voters were being suppressed in Philadelphia, as “bad things happen in Philadelphia, bad things.”, as poll watchers were apparently removed. However, this is untrue as, as the Philadelphia Inquirer states, there are no polling places open in Philadelphia right now. Additionally, the Trump campaign has no poll watchers approved to work there at the moment. Furthermore, he spoke again of the dangers that mail voting posed to the election, despite using it himself in previous elections.

The most significant moment was when he was asked to condemn white supremacy. President Trump answered “almost everything that [he] sees is from the left wing, not the right wing.” He then told the Proud Boys, which the FBI defines as an extremist group, to “stand back and stand by”. This is essentially encouraging racism after months of protests in the country, with many Proud Boys taking it as a new slogan. This presents his white supremacy and the danger he poses if he is re-elected in November.
