Imagine coming from Caribbean countries to the UK with 57,000 other people between 1948 and 1971, as a response to post-war labour shortages. Upon arrival, there were no restrictions and you were allowed freedom of movement. Therefore, you get a job and a house, have children but then get either threatened or actually deported. That is what the Windrush generation have gone through.
Two years ago, after all the media attention the UK government apologised for this, an inquiry was announced, and a compensation scheme established. However, many people believe not enough was done.
Including, Wendy Williams the author of the inquiry report. She said there was a “grave risk” of similar failings happening again if the government neglects to implement its recommendations. Furthermore, campaigners have criticised the size of payments of the compensation scheme. For example, an individual would receive £10,000 for being deported, or £500 for denial of access to higher education.
These people have been wrongly mistreated and continue to be, with the compensation not nearly being enough after many of their livelihoods were destroyed. Petitions, like the one, below have recognised the issue and I hope you do to by signing them.
