What does Stone’s sentence being commuted really mean?
Firstly, we need to look at Roger Stones case. In November he was convicted of 7 felony charges, including lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstructing the investigation into the Trump campaign. Then, in February, he was sentenced to 40 months in prison for attempting to sabotage a congressional investigation.
What Trump did was commuted his jail time, which means that he prevented Stone from going to jail. This doesn’t mean he is pardoned; it just means that he won’t have to serve the prison sentence. This has also come days after the Supreme Court in the USA denied delaying the start of this sentence. Trump claims it is because he ‘is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated.. to undermine the Trump Presidency’. This shows how the president is preventing justice- he has gone against the courts, showing a blur between the executive’s (Trump’s) power and the judiciary (the court’s).
Biden’s spokesman has commented that he has ‘once again abused his power’ and that he must be removed via the ballot box in the coming November election.
