Universal Basic Income is the belief that everybody, no matter their race, gender, sexuality or income should get a sum of money every month, typically $1000. Spain has introduced a UBI for the remainder of the Coronavirus crisis but the government believes it will likely last forever. In the UK, over 100 MPs signed a letter calling for UBI during COVID-19 and the USA saw some form of UBI in the form of the Federal Relief cheque.
The benefits of UBI during a situation such as a global pandemic are undeniable. Millions of people have lost their jobs either temporarily or permanently, but we must ensure that they sit above the poverty line at all times. It is therefore surprising that few countries have adopted the scheme, especially after its mainstreaming, in part thanks to politicians including Andrew Yang and Benoit Hamon.
It is crucial to fight for a basic income now and out of crisis. Control over your life without the risk of falling under the poverty line is a basic human right which must be provided by the government.
