The Crown is a historical drama television series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times. On November 15 its latest season was released; However, over the last couple of weeks, the creators of the drama have been receiving much backlash. What about this particular season is causing much controversy?
One of the main reasons was the depiction of HRH Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, depicting that Charles and Camilla never really ended their romance, despite entering a courtship with the soon to be Princess Diana. In reality, historians including Sally Bedell Smith, claim that they did end their affair when Charles got married, but resumed in 1986, though their friendship never ceased. Due to this, the Duchess of Cornwall, now Charles’ wife, has particularly been the subject of scrutiny, with fans coming to the defence of the late Princess Diana on the Royal Family’s official Instagram account.
The fabrication of fictitious events is further flaming the controversy, such as a letter sent by Lord Mountbatten, warning Charles that he would bring “ruin and disappointment” should he continue to pursue Camilla - however, no record of this letter exists.
Royal insiders such as the friends of Prince Charles also recently revealed how they feel that one of the reasons why the Crown has sparked anger is the depiction of a “callous and self-serving Charles meeting and marrying an innocent Diana” and that there was no consideration for the Royals’ feelings. Prince William, the child of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, feels that “both of his parents are being presented in a false and simplistic way to make money” according to The Express.
