Women at Work and their Treatment

Throughout most of modern history, women have been treated as the “inferior” sex. Originally, a woman’s job was to take care of the house and the children, but during the industrial revolution, women were finally allowed to start working. Of course, this came with a lot of prejudice that has been maintained into modern times. In the workforce, women face gender bias when it comes to what jobs they can do, with people claiming that women aren’t strong or smart enough for certain careers. While many women have tried to prove this wrong, the majority of people in STEM jobs and those requiring manual labor are men.

Women are also pressured to look “pretty” in order to

get a job. Workplaces often hire based on what they deem “professional” and studies have shown that women seen as pretty by the people interviewing them are more likely to get the job. This continues to perpetuate the idea that women who fit modern beauty standards are somehow superior to women who don’t.

Additionally, no matter what job a woman does, she is almost always sexualized in some way. If you go into a halloween store, you will find a “sexy” version of many professions, that are often making caricatures of the jobs they are portraying. These are all issues, but there is no clear way to solve this, as they all stem from misogyny, which usually can be unlearned, most misogynists won’t want to fix these issues. It also comes from the fact that we live in a patriarchal society, which also cannot easily be changed.
