Conversion Therapy Unpacked

Conversion therapy refers to a set of practices that falsely claim to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Practitioners use a range of emotionally or physically traumatic stimuli to make their victims associate their queer identity with shame and pain. There are reports of sexual violence and genital mutilation associated with conversion practices.

Such practices have been condemned by every major medical study, but due to the stigma and societal bias against the LGBTQ community, practitioners in at least 68 countries continue to conduct conversion therapy.

Most victims undergo conversion therapy due to pressure from family or religious leaders. Minors are especially vulnerable as they do not have the legal authority to make medical or mental health decisions.

Conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide. 98% of the victims testify to having suffered permanent physical or psychological damage.

Today just 5 countries have a complete ban on conversion therapy. There is a need for a worldwide movement to outlaw such practices.

No one should be told their identity is something that should be cured.
