It was almost impossible to miss that on June 10th, JK Rowling tweeted “TERF wars” and linked a text on her website. The linked text contained her reasoning behind her transphobic posts over these past few years. This article won’t go into what she said, as many people have already debunked the false claims she made. This text, instead, will touch on how to interact, or not interact, with JK Rowling’s work.
If Harry Potter has been an important part of your life, you might be tempted to take the easiest way out, believing once media is out in the world, it belongs to the consumers, not the creators. It is not that simple. There are two things that you should consider before you interact with Rowling’s work:
Her work is filled with her prejudices; whether she intended this or not. The goblins from Harry Potter provide a clear example of this.
JK Rowling profits from every book, t-shirt and movie ticket sold. Do not put more money in the pocket of a transphobic millionaire.
