Physical and Mental Health - Bridging the gap

The distinction between mental health and physical health dates back to the 17th century when philosopher Descartes proposed his dualist ideas. He believed the mind and body are utterly different. Cartesian dualism (the idea’s name), is still a fundamental idea in modern medicine, remaining in practice by doctors. However, new research suggests we should bridge this gap as it might be the cure for some mental health disorders.

Inflammation is the result of the immune system fighting off threats to the human body. Many diseases originate from inflammation; these include diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and several others. Among these, it has been found that there is an increased risk of depression; the risk of depression is at least doubled for those with diabetes, those who have heart disease/arthritis have an increased risk as well as depression worsening patients outcomes. This suggests that there is a potential that inflammation leads to depression.

Although advances are still in progress, we still know little about the causes of depression. Treatment options for drugs like Prozac (or other SSRIs) and psychotherapy are limited. By 2030, it’s suggested depression will become the single biggest cause of disability. The more we can bridge the gap, less stigma will surround mental health issues. Additionally, more medical progress might be made.
