The ‘lockdown look’ takes a different shape on us all. Whilst some have found new healthy living and exercise regimes, others, including myself, have taken this as a time to indulge.
Within our differences, I feel that it is important that we are reminded there is not just one body shape that is beautiful. Be reminded of the damage promoting a “one size fits all” mentality can cause.
Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa are somewhat of a phenomena clinical psychologists are yet to uncover. Some believe it is the result of a genetic predisposition due to genes such as Epoxide Hydrolase 2 (EPHX2) whilst others believe it could be down to different brain chemistry - a result of exogenous stimulus. The truth
may sit in a combination of these factors. As a consequence, with such ambiguity surrounding the matter, it is crucial that we take precaution to bear in mind that some people might be more susceptible to damage resulting from certain stimuli displaying the portrayal of the “ideal body type”; especially when most portrayals are myth.
Beauty does not exist in a certain size; we are all beautiful in our own ways. We need to emphasise that there are many different shapes and sizes beauty can take. We need to normalise diversity in body types to remind ourselves we need to love one and other no matter of shape, size or colour. We need to remember that a person’s metabolism should have no effect on how beautiful they are.
